How to optimise your diet based on your Dosha

Each person has a unique ‘Dosha’ – knowing whether you have a dominance of Vata, Pitta or Kapha is the key to optimising your nutrition and knowing what foods to eat to lose weight.

If you’re not familiar with Ayurvedic Doshas, here’s a quick run through:

The 3 unique body types or ‘Doshas’ according to ayurveda are…

Vata consists of the two elements air and space.
Those with the vata dosha are usually described as slim, energetic, and creative.

Kapha is based on earth and water.
People with the kapha dosha are described as strong, thick-boned, and caring.

Pitta is based on fire and water.
People with pitta are known to be associated with a strong and tenacious personality, and serve as strong leaders.

When it comes to weight loss – your Dosha can help you gain insight into the type of nutrition plan that will work best for your unique body and help you to lose weight the fastest.

Generic diet statements like:

“Avoid carbs”
“Try low fat”
“Juices and salads are the way to go”

Are useless because they don’t take into account what your unique body type is. Pittas thrive on juices and salads, whereas a Kapha may find them unsatisfying and reach for warm, comforting food instead.

This is why you may know some people who eat 3-4 slices of pizza and remain skinny and others who gain a pound just at the thought of pizza.

You may like strawberries more than you like papaya, and you may dislike tomato and that has to do with your dosha and how your unique body processes foods. It prefers some over others and your body is giving you this signal every single day.

Once you know what your dosha composition is, then it’s much easier to find that inner state of balance and to know what foods to eat for your body. You become a better intuitive eater once you apply Ayurvedic principles to truly understand yourself before you reach out for food.

As a result, it’s much easier to:

Say no to things that you know don’t work for you, rather than force yourself to eat them because someone told you it helps with weight loss
Feel good about foods you used to restrict yourself from because you thought they were “bad” (when actually your body was just telling you what it needs)
Know with absolute certainty that you’re making good choices that work for you

This is a much more balanced energetic place to approach your weight loss goals and you’ll find it becomes a truly natural, enjoyable experience, because it comes from within.
